5-4 Supreme Court takes away Constitutional Right to Choose...
Did the court today lay the foundation to erode further rights based on notions of privacy rights?
The decision to consider abortions illegal is a defining moment for the Supreme Court which is more conservative than it has been in many decades. A shift in legal thinking was made possible after then-President Donald Trump placed three justices on the court. Two of them have succeeded justices who voted to affirm abortion rights.
Several states have already passed laws limiting or banning the abortion procedure in anticipation of the ruling. 13 states have triggered laws in place that called for the prohibition of abortion when or if Roe was overruled, which it was. Abortion clinics in conservative states are now looking ahead to a possible dreadful future as they prepare for possible closures. Abortion clinics in liberal states on the flipside are working in preparation for a possible influx of patients from other states.
Forerunners of Roe were based solely on privacy rights such as the right to use contraceptives. States have already imposed restrictions surrounding the use and purchase of contraceptives. The majority said the decision does not erode other privacy rights…
The main question we all must ask as a nation is: Can the conservative majority be believed?
