Tesla’s Virtual Powerplant in California
Financial News
Tesla and California utility Pacific Gas and Electric Company launched a new program that pays eligible Powerwall home battery owners to send excess energy to the state's power grid in times of need.
As well as the personal feeling of satisfaction for helping to stabilize California's grid, you'll receive $2 for every additional kilowatt-hour delivered during designated "events," such as any time grid operator CAISO issues an energy alert, warning, or emergency. Contributors will receive push notifications before and during an event with details of its expected start and finish times. Once an event is over, each Powerwall will automatically resume normal operation.

Russia Defaults on Foreign Debt
World News
Russia missed the deadline to meet a 30-day grace period on interest payments that were originally due May 27, but it could be a while before the default is confirmed. This is the first time it has occurred since 1918.
The debt default stems from the sanctions imposed over Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which was launched in late February. The default signals the first of its kind since 1918, although Russia has called it artificial because it can afford to pay its debts, sanctions have frozen its foreign currency reserves held abroad.
23 million Californians will Receive “Inflation Relief” Payments
Economic News
Millions of California taxpayers will get “inflation relief” tax rebate payments after lawmakers have reached an agreement on the framework of the 2022-23 budget. The deal also suspends the state's sales tax on diesel.
The framework includes giving 23 million Californians direct payments of up to $1,050. The payments would be issued via direct deposit refunds or debit cards to tax filers by late October, according to the Newsom administration. The state's Franchise Tax Board estimates that all would be issued by the end of 2022 or early next year.
The January 6th Select House Committee takes a New Approach to Reach Voters
Political News
House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy's decision not to participate gave the committee a gift, the chance to craft hearings as a unicorn of sorts in today's political age.
The hearings are concise, no more than 2.5 hours, each day with a specific theme. It goes like this: First, viewers are told at the outset what they're going to hear. Then they hear it. Then they are told at the end what they just heard. Usually, there's a preview of what's next — a trick that likely reflects the advice of James Goldston, a former ABC News producer hired as a consultant.
