A Reversal of a Reversal: The Miami Dade County School Board Book Debacle
The Miami-Dade County School board has reversed itself once again as they voted to approve health and sex education textbooks for middle school and high school students.
The Miami-Dade County School board has reversed itself once again as they voted to approve health and sex education textbooks for middle school and high school students. Not only was it a singular reversal, but it was a reversal to a reversal as the school board approved books in April, then rejected them last week. The rejection was once then reversed with a 5 to 4 vote.
“We sighed a moment of relief because what transpired last week was essentially a banning of books and a banning of knowledge. That’s a dangerous precedent for our students.”
Lucia Baez-Geller, a board member who voted to approve the books, said.
The “Comprehensive Health Skills” April approval of books began the wave of petitions citing new state laws that people call the Parental Rights in Education measure and that opponents have labeled the “Don’t Say Gay” law. The measure was signed by Ron DeSantis in March and prohibited the discussion of sexual orientation and gender for elementary school students. The law itself has become one of the most known aspects of the nationwide “Red Wave” to make “Parental Rights” a central political issue.
The Miami-Dade textbooks cover traditional topics of sex education such as pregnancy, STDs, and things such as stress management and drugs and alcohol.
“Much of the content is not age-appropriate, usurps parental rights, and is scientifically inaccurate and not factual.”
Alex Serrano, director of the Miami-Dade chapter of County Citizens Defending Freedom, said.
With all due respect this 'age appropriate' stuff is getting old. Just teach children how/what sex is very very young (I'm talking in elementary school) and you will prevent much of the middle school and high school pregnancy problems.
