The United States Capitol has been the scene of multiple obscure situations. This morning added another event as a man drove his car into a barricade near the Capitol and then began to fire gunshots before shooting himself. The incident took place around 4 in the morning at East Capitol Street NE and 2nd Street SE in Washington D.C.
Law enforcement authorities across the country are facing a multitude of threats. Federal officials have even warned of the possibility of attacks on government buildings and officials just days after the outrage sparked by the FBI’s raid of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home.
In April of last year, a man drove his car into two Capitol Police officers at a checkpoint which led to the death of an 18-year veteran. Many officers and officials remain on edge as well due to the January 6th riots.
Capitol Police authorities claim the man crashed into the barricade as he was getting out of the vehicle. The vehicle was shortly engulfed in flames and the man opened fire as he shot into the air. As officers neared the man, he shot himself and was later pronounced dead. According to the officers, it didn’t appear as if the man was targeting any member of Congress.
A further investigation into the man’s background is to be conducted going forward.
