Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the President of Mexico, denounced the Israeli government for its supposed protection of a former official wanted in Mexico. The official is wanted on accusations that he manipulated a probe into the disappearance of 43 students in 2014. Last year, Israel was urged by Mexico to facilitate the extradition of Tomas Zeron, the former official in question.
Mexican officials claim the former head of Mexico’s Criminal Investigation Agency fled to Israel in 2020 to evade the probe. Pressure has been mounted again to return Zeron to Mexico following the arrest of Jesus Murillo, Zeron’s former boss, and former Attorney General, on charges of forced disappearance, obstruction of justice, and torture.
"Let me take the opportunity to send a respectful reminder to the government of Israel. They can't be protecting people like that."
President Manuel Lopez Obrador said adding that “it has been a long time” since Israel’s PM sent a letter to discuss cooperation.
