It has not been confirmed whether or not Nancy Pelosi will be visiting Taiwan, but it is confirmed that tensions in the Strait have been rising quickly. The visit itself is being rumored as a risk that can provoke a significant reaction since Xi Jinping doesn’t want to look weak in the opposition. This can be an undercut if rivals accuse Xi Jinping of failing to be strong and tough in the face of what they would all consider “American Provocation.”

President Biden has made it clear to reporters that the United States military along with other government officials doesn’t think the visit is “a good idea right now.” But, the President himself hasn’t said Pelosi shouldn’t go. General Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said, “If we’re asked, we’ll do what is necessary in order to ensure a safe visit.”

The United Kingdom has warned the United States of “sleepwalking” into a war with China. Specifically, the United Kingdom’s national security adviser warned that all of the Western powers and China are “sleepwalking” into nuclear war due to a miscalculation.

Henry Kissinger said geopolitics today requires “Nixonian flexibility” to aid in defusing conflicts between the United States, China, Russia, and the rest of Europe. Many have indicated that since the Gingrich visit of 1997, China is now richer, more heavily armed, and less willing to compromise over Taiwan.

Political pressure is mounting due to the timing and Xi Jinping is expected to try to award himself a third five-year term as party leader at a meeting this fall. That can be undercut if those opposing can accuse Xi Jinping of failing to stand against the United States.

The reality is that the United States and China are not equal in any meaningful way and China is not stronger than the United States. Maybe they have less to lose, but that’s it. Let’s look at the 2021 GDP:

In a military sense, China is also very much behind the United States. Chinese equipment is built on Soviet Technology. They have almost zero combat experience and at sea, their carries are jump jets. The United States’ nuclear arsenal is much more powerful as well as much more accurate than China’s and yes, I know nukes don’t need to be pinpointed…

Demographics in the Chinese population are also on the decline while the United States continuously grows. There is no immigration to China while the United States continues to be a magnet for people all over the world. China needs the United States more than the United States needs China. Without the United States market, a huge percentage of China’s economy would grind to a halt. We would have to get used to not having cheap stuff from China, but in the long term, we would be fine. China on the other hand, not so much.

We are a vibrant society and economy. China is a totalitarian system where dissent is squashed and innovation is not even close to being encouraged unless given the thumbs up by the CCCP. Pelosi is the third in line to the Presidency and she should not bow or bend to what China wants.

They know their bread is buttered and they will eventually back down their claims.
