Charlie Crist has resigned from his Congressional seat to shift gears and focus on a full-fledged campaign to unseat Ron DeSantis, the current Governor of Florida. During his time in Congress, Crist was representing the Pinellas County District since 2016. Last week, he pulled through to win the Democratic primary for governor beating Nikki Fried, the current agriculture commissioner.
Ron DeSantis did the same thing as Crist four years ago as he left his Congressional seat after winning the GOP nomination for Governor to race against Adam Putman. Julia Friedland, the GOP National Committee spokeswoman, said, “Charlie Crist treats taxpayer-funded jobs like a game of musical chairs. Floridians can’t wait to cut the music on his career for good in November.”
The district that was represented by Crist was redrawn by DeSantis and the GOP legislature in Florida due to the once-a-decade redistricting. The newer district is expected to elect a Republican. Even as a court ruled the redistricting plan unconstitutional due to the elimination of a North Flordia District and the scattering of 370,000 voters across four districts.
