Crazy Ohio Lawmaker claims Pregnancy after rape is 'an opportunity'?!
Ohio Rep. Jean Schmidt claimed that a teenager that was raped would have an “opportunity” to become a “productive human being.”
Outrage has been sparked during a hearing on an abortion bill when Ohio Rep. Jean Schmidt claimed that a teenager that was raped would have an “opportunity” to become a “productive human being.” Schmidt made the comments during a hearing over her own House Bill 598 which would ban abortions in Ohio if the Roe vs. Wade decision is overturned.
Within her bill, there is no exception to rape or incest. As many know, this. is the most common rebuttal against any abortion scenario (asking if it is justified or not if the individual is raped or involved in incest). For Rep. Rich Brown, this is an issue and he posed an imaginary situation about what would happen to a 13-year-old girl who became pregnant after being raped.
T"This bill would require this 13-year-old to carry this felon's fetus to term regardless of any emotional or psychological damage or trauma that may be inflicted upon this 13-year-old girl to deliver this felon's fetus. Is that right?"
Brown asked Schmidt
Schmidt responded in what would come to be known as the controversial breaking point - a.k.a another instance of stupid politicians…
"It is a shame that it happens but there is an opportunity for that woman, no matter how young or old she is, to make a determination about what she's going to do to help that life be a productive human being. Just because you have emotional scars doesn't give you the right to take the life."
In response, Brown claimed that forcing a child to carry an unwanted child would create more trauma. "I think this girl has rights every bit as much as the zygote has rights under your bill. This girl has rights and I don't think we can lose sight of the rights of the person who was raped,” Brown stated.
In pure disagreement with the situation, Schmidt pulled the card of the fetus having rights: "That 13-year-old has rights but so does that baby inside of her."
Schmidt has backing from the Ohio Right to Life. Their president, Mike Gonidakis, says “An opportunity to live is greater than an opportunity to die.”
Democrats on the committee hope to add some form of exemption for rape and incest to the law but several of the current abortion restrictions in Ohio don’t include that protection.
"Pregnancy and childbirth are often traumatic and dangerous on their own. To then force a survivor of rape to carry a pregnancy to term and go through childbirth is utterly vile and only adds to the trauma they have already suffered.”
Rep. Tavia Galonski, a member of the committee reviewing the bill, said
Once again, another instance of a politician spewing absolute bullshit… SAD
