Steve Bannon’s Jury Selection Begins Today

Steven Bannon’s trial is set to begin choosing the jury today. Bannon, the former Trump advisor, is facing criminal contempt of Congress after he dismissed subpoenas and refused to cooperate with the House Committee investigating the Capitol Riots. He was originally indicted in November on both counts of contempt of Congress. Each count carries nearly 30 days to a full year in prison.
Last week, Steve Bannon confirmed that he is willing to testify against Trump and the events leading up to the January 6th Capitol Riots. Robert Costello, his lawyer, said the change came due to Trump waiving his executive privilege claim.

Gavin Newsom, the California Governor, ran some ads recently that seemingly targeted Ron DeSantis, the Florida Governor. Many jumped to the speculation that this was a start to his [Newsom] 2024 Presidential bid against his potential opponent, DeSantis. However, Newsom indicated the motivation behind the ads was to encourage Florida residents to move to California after Governor DeSantis took aim at the Special Olympics.
"He did something that tipped me very directly, and that was going after the Special Olympics. I had an emotional response to that," said. Last month, the Florida Department of Health told Special Olympic officials that they would fine their organization nearly $30 Million if they didn’t cut out the vaccine mandate for the Walt Disney World Resort-hosted event.

Sergei Shoigu, the Russian Defense Minister, ordered his military to prioritize destroying the Ukrainian long-range missiles and other weapons supplied by the Western world. The Vostok group has been inspected in Ukraine and Shoigu said, "I’ve instructed the commander to give priority to the enemy's long-range missile and artillery weapons.”

The consensus surrounding the Fed raising interest rates by 75bps is pretty confident. It appears that the Fed will do so for the second straight meeting as the door was left wide open for a full-percentage increase at the July meeting (taking place 26th-27th). However, some of the Fed has indicated that economic activity was easing and according to Fed governor Christopher Waller, “You don’t want to overdo the rate increases. A 75-basis-point hike, folks, is huge. Don’t say, ‘Because you’re not going 100, you’re not doing your job.’”
Before last week, the belief was that the Fed was leaning toward a 75bps increase. After a 9.1% inflation report, however, a full-point increase becomes more reasonable.
