Emmanuel Macron pledged to keep France’s humanitarian, military, and economic support flowing into Ukraine in order to pile pressure on Russia and prevent them from becoming victorious in their invasion of Ukraine. He said in a speech, “We cannot let Russia militarily win the war. We must get prepared for a long war.”
Macron also voiced his support for the IAEA’s visit to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant to assess the safety of the area after Ukraine and Russia continue to trade accusations of shelling around the Russian-controlled area. He added that he will “keep talking” to Russia despite the criticism received from some countries in eastern Europe which continue to push a hardline stance against Russia. Macron said, “We must do everything to make a negotiated peace possible. We must not let Europe get divided over the war in Ukraine and its consequences.”
For the upcoming year, Emmanuel Macron outlined the French goals of diplomacy as he praised the views of Olaf Scholz, the German Chancellor, for his acts of being “fully in line” with pleas for a stronger and more unified Europe.
