Five Palestinians have been executed by Hamas, the ruling group of Gaza. Two of the Palestinian victims were charged with espionage for Israel in 2009 and 2015. All of the executions were the first in the area since 2017, all conducted by hanging or firing squad. The other three Palestinians were convicted of murders.
"The execution was carried out after the conclusion of all legal procedures. The rulings had been final, with implementation mandatory, after all of the convicted were accorded full rights to defend themselves.”
A Hamas statement said.
The death penalty has recently been condemned by Palestinian Human Rights groups with the backing of international human rights groups. President Mahmoud Abbas has the final word, however, on whether executions are to be carried out or not, according to Palestinian Law. Gaza itself has no effective rules for the President.
180 Palestinians have been sentenced to death since Hamas took control of Gaza. 33 of those have been executed as the Palestinian Center for Human Rights continues to push back against the executions claiming them to be violations of Palestinian law.
