Gavin Newsom may be a Very Strong General Election Candidate
New hypothetical polling matched Newsom against Biden, Harris, DeSantis, and Trump...
Gavin Newsom continues to shift into the national spotlight as he began to run ads in Florida attacking current Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. As things heat up for Newsom on the national stage, it was only a matter of time before major polling was released in which he was a hypothetical presidential candidate.
A survey conducted June 24 to 27 by Yahoo News and YouGov polled hypothetical 2024 presidential races between President Biden, Kamala Harris, and Gavin Newsom. On the Republican side were Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis. The polling data found:
Biden leads Trump 42% to 40% and DeSantis 41% to 37%.
Kamala Harris tied with Trump 41% to 41% and had the same margin as Biden v. DeSantis of 41% to 37%.
Newsom beat Trump 40% to 39% and DeSantis 39% to 36%.
In every poll, there also seemed to be many undecided voters.
However, the key takeaway from the hypothetical polling is that Newsom would be the stronger general election candidate when compared to Kamala Harris. In the poll against Trump, Newsom outshined Harris and also was said to have the most room for growth as 21% of the voters said they were undecided in a Newsom-Trump election compared to 18% for Harris-Trump.
Many would argue that Kamala did better against DeSantis but this is the reasoning we mention the undecided voters. DeSantis has his polls with 20%+ individuals stating they are undecided between him or another candidate. This is true more so when DeSantis is hypothetically matched against Newsom.
