Covid has reached where people never expected - North Korea - and as it is running through the country, it seems North Korean health officials are just classifying the deaths as being from “fevers.”
There have been a reported 15 deaths added to the existing total from “fevers” yesterday. These announcements come as the country revealed its first ever Covid case which led to national lockdowns.
According to state media KCNA, 42 people have died with 820,620 cases and at least 324,550 under medical treatments. Kim Jong Un has said the outbreak of Covid has caused a “great upheaval” in the communist country.
“All provinces, cities, and counties of the country have been totally locked down and working units, production units, and residential units closed from each other.”
North Korea has a completely unvaccinated population and even with their “maximum emergency quarantine system” being activated to aid in the slowing of Covid’s spread, the country is reporting massive jumps in the number of cases daily. On Thursday, the country reported that they detected Omicron in the capital Pyongyang as Kim Jong Un ordered national lockdowns.
“The spread of malignant disease comes to be a great upheaval in our country since the founding of the DPRK.”
Kim said yesterday as he also recounted the fact that it was the country’s first official admission of Covid cases.
With one of the worst health systems in the world including no antiviral treatment drugs or no mass testing capacity, it is inevitable that the North Korean health system crumbles sooner than later. The country itself has turned down offers of the Covid vaccine from China and the WHO. In an updated offer, North Korea has been offered fresh offers from Seoul and Beijing.
There was no report which specified whether the new cases and deaths had been tested for Covid or even tested positive but many experts are rumoring that the country will have near future struggles with testing and diagnosing.
