Making Schools Hard Targets can be a Fix, not Disarming all of America
Most schools are soft targets and I believe this is what we should critique first...
Currently, on the books in the United States, there are over 200 gun control laws both at the Federal and State level. They literally cover everything and insane criminals don’t care and never will. If there is a new law that protects the children I am all in and will do anything and everything in my power to help.
The idiot in Texas has two legal long guns and one illegal handgun (a handgun is obviously illegal due to the fact that he was not 21). This kid did the waiting period and completed the background checks, he was indeed insane, and ultimately it all didn’t matter.
However, what did matter, was that the school was a soft target. Most schools are. The Texas Attorney General has now proposed arming teachers in schools. It’s obvious he has seen enough of it all and with the known fact that Texas will just be Texas, they will make arming the teachers work. My guess is that there are already tens of thousands of teachers currently in Texas school districts who own handguns. I know it’s very cliche to say, but seriously, it’s Texas…
The follow-up is that other red states will do the same. Then, there will be a two-tiered system where half the kids are “protected” (red states) and the others aren’t (blue states). I’m not saying this is the right idea, but what I am saying is schools do need to become a harder target for situations like this to occur. Also, once again, what a shitty world it is that we even have to consider arming teachers. They can’t even properly teach half the time let alone be the ones in charge of defending a classroom. Maybe it’s a psychological thing - shooters will think twice about entering and attempting a mass shooting in an area with more guns than them.
In 16 states there is a 50%+ ownership of guns by the people. In 37 states, that number only drops by 10% to 40%+. So, in 37 states, between 40% and 60% of people own guns. In all of these states, getting a permit to carry is no big deal. Basically, the same background check as for ownership or you don’t need to get a permit - you can automatically carry.
States not requiring permits:
Now we get to the juicy part. The concern that cashiers, bus drivers, and people in offices could carry guns and that it would be a disaster is already happening. In most of America, about half the everyday people in everyday jobs can have guns with them. Statistics prove that the more citizens armed, the lower the crime rate. Criminals are savvy. It is much easier to be a cirminal where evryone isn’t armed.
Conversely, this is millions of guns a crazed lunatic person can get a hold of and cause a tragedy. They can also snap and use their legal guns to cause a tragedy. I don't know what all this means, but I know disarming America is not in the cards. This is why I think we must make the schools "Hard" targets…
