According to a new Gallup poll, more people in the United States are reported to smoke marijuana instead of nicotine cigarettes. This happens to be the first occurrence on record and indicates evidence of a shift in people’s attitudes toward different substances.

Cigarettes as a whole have been on a negative decline. 11% of adults in the United States claim they smoke cigarettes which compared to the same poll in the 1950s shows a 34% decline. 16% of Americans in the poll say they smoke marijuana and 48% of them say they have tried it over their lifetime. In 1969, when the same question was asked, only 4% of Americans said they smoke marijuana. To add to this, 53% of Americans claim marijuana has positive effects in the long term.

In a 2019 Gallup poll, 83% of those polled indicated their belief that cigarettes are considered “very harmful” and in a 2013 poll, 90% of adults said they believed smoking in general causes cancer.

"Smoking cigarettes is clearly on the decline and is most likely to become even more of a rarity in the years ahead. This reflects both public awareness of its negative effects and continuing government efforts at all levels to curtail its use.
The future of marijuana use is, I would say, somewhat up in the air, but the probability is higher that its use will increase rather than decrease. The trend is toward increased legalization, and this is supported by the attitudes of the significant majority of the American public."
Dr. Frank Newport, the lead author of the study, said.

Alcohol as used by the American public has remained consistent. 67% of Americans consider themselves drinkers and when polling in 1939 asked the same question, 63% of Americans considered themselves drinkers.

"The future of alcohol drinking presents the most fascinating sociological case study out of the three substances. Its use continues to be intertwined with many aspects of American culture. If the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior, then the best guess would be to predict no significant change in alcohol use going forward."
