President Biden is 18 Months into his Term: What has he Done Well, Done Badly, and what is out of his Control Completely?

Currently, President Biden has ridiculously low approval ratings and the two major driving factors seem to be the economy and his age — which yes, stumbling over words and needing a cue card does not enhance your image. However, he has made diversity a priority with mixed results. He has also been very hesitant to use executive orders or initiate anything controversial such as packing the Supreme Court in favor of the Democrats. This comes even as bipartisanship is nearly impossible. The Build-Back Better plan is dead and the Democratic party has been the fourth split between center-left Democrats and the left extremists.

All in all, there really is no clear path. However, that isn’t to say there isn’t a path…

In my opinion, President Biden has been average. This is a major positive compared to Trump. A lot of large complaints against him are things that are just metrics used toward any president that the president really has no ability to control. It would be more reasonable to look at the jobs specifically managed by the President. Look at the performance of the jobs President Biden is tasked to do.

Just an example, but one of the negatives is his failure to nominate a new candidate or candidates to the FEC and fix the corruption of it which is stupidly blatant. This specifically is Biden’s job and there is no excuse for him to not have any lined up nominations.

Further things are done well and done very badly:

Done Well:

  • Foreign Policy (yes, even Afghanistan).

  • Infrastructure Bill actually passed.

  • Union Support (the NLRB and the Biden administration are union-friendly and the news of unions forming is at least in part thanks to that).

  • Childcare Credit in the stimulus package…

Done Badly:

  • Childcare tax credit expansion did not renew. Childcare costs are through the roof. His administration absolutely bungled the no-brainer argument. Call it a pro-life position, use the media. This tax credit made a difference for parents and made childcare much more affordable.

  • Horrible messaging all around on inflation.

  • Nothing bold with Student loans so far. The 10k forgiveness would at least be something, but so far huge campaign promises are broken.

Out of President Biden’s Control:

  • Inflation - whoever won 2020 was going to have to deal with this…

  • Housing Costs - This has to be addressed by Congress with a new law — executive action alone can’t address this. However, good luck getting that as long as the filibuster exists, regardless of who is in control of the senate…

  • Gas Prices - Between Ukraine and an oil industry that’s cozy with some Democrats and all Republicans…not much he could do besides release oil from national reserves…
