United States Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito has given his first public remarks since the overturning of Roe v. Wade and has dismissed criticisms of the ruling from prominent figures such as Boris Johnson, Emmanuel Macron, and Justin Trudeau.
"I had the honor this term of writing I think the only Supreme Court decision in the history of that institution that has been lambasted by a whole string of foreign leaders who felt perfectly fine commenting on American law.
One of these was former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, but he paid the price.
But what really wounded me - what really wounded me - was when the Duke of Sussex addressed the United Nations and seemed to compare the decision whose name may not be spoken with the Russian attack on Ukraine."
Samuel Alito said during his speech at a conference on religious liberty in Rome hosted by the University of Notre Dame Law School.
The references to the abortion ruling were met with laughs from the audience. In more detail, for one, Prince Harry spoke on July 18th and deemed 2022 as a “painful decade” before citing the Ukraine war and the “rolling back of constitutional rights in the United States.” Boris Johnson even claimed the overturning of Roe v. Wade was a “Big step backward.”
Further down the list of critics, French President Emmanuel Macron said the day and decision meant women’s freedoms have been compromised. Samuel Alito’s colleague, Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan, said it is “dangerous to democracy” that the Supreme Court is losing confidence in the American public.
