Radically Right Candidates can harm the GOP come November
Political News
Radical right candidates who have claimed their support of Donald Trump’s big lie of a stolen election could possibly win primaries in Arizona and Michigan next week. If the Democratic strategy is working correctly, this would lead to the Democrat nominee winning the midterm.
In Arizona, Blake Masters and Kari Lake are leading the Republic side of the Senate and Governor races. Tudor Dixon could capture the win for the governor nominee in Michigan as well. Senate is a complicated race in Georgia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
AOC Criticizes Samuel Alito’s Mocking of Criticisms from Global Leaders Concerning the Overturning of Roe
Political News
Yesterday, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito was mocking global leaders’ criticisms of the overturning of Roe v. Wade during a speech hosted by the University of Notre Dame. AOC has since criticized the comments saying they were “politicized” and demonstrated a “legitimacy crisis” in the Supreme Court.
"Remember: it was Alito's opinion that leaked. That fact paired with his politicized remarks below should be alarming to anyone. The Supreme Court is in a legitimacy crisis. Chief Justice Roberts has a responsibility to share the progress & results of SCOTUS' leak investigation,” said AOC.
Russian Soldier’s War Crimes get a reduced Sentencing
World News
Vadim Shishimarin has had his sentence from a Ukrainian court reduced to 10 years. The trial has been one that has been watched closely as an early indicator of if it is possible to conduct fair trials during the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Many have said that the sentencing was unduly harsh given that Vadim confessed to the crime, of killing a civilian, and expressed remorse. Vadim’s defense lawyer had appealed to the court to reduce the sentence to 10 years.
Bitcoin Rallies on News of Fed Rate Hike
Economic News
As the stock market has been moving relatively well in response to the Fed’s decision to increase rates by 75bps, cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum have also been up. More specifically, since mid-week, Bitcoin has been up 12%. Many have said it’s due to the idea of “The Riskier the Better.” However, it seems to be the continuation of the correlation between stocks and crypto. Both markets were on their way the day after the Terra incident and since then the crypto markets have been lacking ever so slightly.
As stocks have risen amid optimism around the Fed's plans, crypto assets have risen, too, with the correlation between bitcoin and the S&P 500 back near 0.7.
House Republicans Dismiss Possibility of a Donald Trump Indictment from the DOJ
Political News
Multiple House Republicans have dismissed the seemingly impending indicting of Donald Trump by the DOJ for his involvement with the January 6th Capitol Riot. Kevin McCarthy, Hosue Minority Leader, said, “There’s nothing here to charge them with and they know it. The one thing we know about the DOJ is how political they’ve become and they got to stop being political.”
Elise Stefanik, the House GOP Conference Chair, said relatively the same thing. She said, “We’ve seen a politicized DOJ and Biden administration. Take the Colbert-sent reporters, with the U.S. Attorney and DOJ, did not want to prosecute them.”
Scott Perry has said, “I’ve made plenty of statements regarding the January 6 so-called committee. I think this is a political operation. And this is just the next step in the political operation.”
“I think that what the committee has done, in my opinion, essentially creating a pseudo grand jury on national TV, has been atrocious. I think that there needs to be a serious look at what passing of information occurred between this committee and the Department of Justice,” said Rep. Byron Donalds.
