Today we are expected to receive an opinion from the EU’s executive arm on the Ukrainian membership path along with what conditions countries will have to meet in the future on the rule of law, justice, and anti-corruption. The commission is said to also be set to recommend granting candidate status to Georgia as well as soon as it meets the conditions.

As three countries navigate their way to EU membership, it is monumental, especially for Ukraine as they seem to mostly be looking for moral support against Russia’s invasion.

All 27 member states have to obviously approve of the final decision. The procedure for membership is an extensive and arduous process that requires conditions to be met and can last more than a decade. The last country to join the EU was Croatia and its application sat out for ten years.

EU officials and members such as Emmanuel Macron (France), Mario Draghi (Italy), and Olaf Scholz (Germany) gave a boost to the probability of Ukraine becoming a member state after endorsing the membership bid on a visit to Kyiv. The Romanian president Klaus Lohannis also joined.

“The biggest message we want to send in this trip is that Italy wants Ukraine in the EU. Italy, France and Germany are here to give unconditional support to Ukraine.”
Mario Draghi said.

A meeting will be held in Brussels on June 23-24 and the discussion will continue further there. With major leaders of the larger member states on board, it seems it will be harder for other members to deny the decision.

The first formal application to the EU from Ukraine was proposed late February. The commission president Ursula von der Leyen hand delivered a membership questionnair to Volodymyr Zelenskiy and returned last week to further discussions.

“Candidate status for Ukraine can strengthen freedom in Europe and become one of key European decisions in the first third of 21st century. We are ready to work so that our country transforms into full-fledged member of the European union. And Ukrainians already deserved the right to begin this path and get candidate status.”
Volodymyr Zelenskiy said.
