26 flights headed to China have been suspended by the United States government in response to China’s own decision to ban/suspend United States carrier flights. China has banned some United States carrier flights over concerns of Covid cases. Suspending the flights will run through September 28th. United Airlines and Delta Airlines have been suspended by China from making trips, according to the United States Department of Transportation.

19 of the flights were from Los Angeles and 7 flights from New York. As of August 7th, Chinese authorities have revised Covid policies so if the number of passengers testing positive reached 4%, China would cancel/suspend flights. If the number of passengers testing positive was 8%, two flights would be canceled. Objections have been raised by the United States Department of Transportation citing the rules “placing undue culpability on carriers” when travelers test negative before boarding flights from the United States.

Since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, the United States and China have gone back n forth in a competitive fashion to organize the policies surrounding Covid. Last year, the United States Department of Transportation limited four flights from China-based carriers to 40% passenger capacity.
