Utah Teenager Dies in a Sand Dune Tunnel he Dug
State park staff and visitors began to try and dig out the teen after a family member witnessed the collapse but it was too late...
According to Utah State Parks, a 13-year-old boy has died in a dune collapse last weekend. Ian Spendlove of Santa Clara, Utah was digging tunnels in the side of a sand dune at the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park over the weekend when it suddenly collapsed.
State park staff and visitors began to try and dig out the teen after a family member witnessed the collapse around 5:30 pm. He was eventually located six feet (this is too soon, but it is ironic) beneath the sand just around 30 minutes later, according to a statement.
Helicopters airlifted Ian to the St. George Regional Hospital and he was eventually transferred to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City.
On Sunday, Ian had failed to regain brain activity and was declared dead.
"The Utah Division of State Parks extends our condolences to Ian Spendlove's friends and family impacted by this tragedy."
The statement concluded.
