What would Happen if Donald Trump lost the Republican Primary in 2024?
Think Piece/Open Discussion
According to some data pulled from AP, 1 in 3 GOP candidates running for offices throughout the country support the “big lie” of election fraud. Due to this, it seems to be a way to galvanize support against their Democratic opponents and current Republican elected officials have been placed in positions where it seems internally risky to speak out for the election’s validity. Their wish is to not chance inter-party competition in primaries.
However, as DeSantis has a slight lead over Donald Trump in the hypothetical 2024 election polling and with how Donald Trump has already responded to one election loss, it seems very plausible that if he were to run again, and lose the primary this time, he could just reject the loss — just as he rejected the 2020 presidential election loss to Joe Biden.
Compared to the 2020 general election, how different of a situation would a primary loss be and the rejection of the results be? You would assume that this situation would presumably break the narrative of election integrity being a Democrat vs Republican thing. It may also cause a further divide within the Republican party since it would mean the majority of Republican voters rejected a Trump candidacy.
There’s also the case of the growing distrust in the American election system which this scenario would further that flame. Or would it serve as a restorative process and means to finally get aay from the seeming inseprable relationship between Donald Trump and the GOP political agenda?
In my opinion, it seems the immediate implication would be a schism in the Republican party. GOP politicians would no longer be stuck between appeasing Trump’s base and appealing to moderates. This would suggest Trump would be better off pulling his base away from the Republican party entirely. If he were to eventually create his own third party, it could be essentially guaranteed.
In this scenario specifically of Donald Trump creating a third party, the Democrats would most likely gain full control of the government for many years to come. However, I would also suspect that we as a country would see a conflict between the progressive wing and other element of the Democratic party.
Whatever follows after such an event is impossible to predict given the fact that Donald Trump has had his spur of erratic behavior in the past. His base also has a notoriously massive amount of dogmatic tendencies…
